Beard and Butter

THE CHALLENGE

Beard and Butter had a real product story — three brothers who formulated organic beard oils, balms, and skincare locally because imported grooming products were the only option. What they needed next was a digital home that could carry that premium positioning: a clear shop, product categories that scale (oils, balms, shampoo, body wash, clay masks, candles), and a site sturdy enough to support international interest without feeling like a template store.

THE SOLUTION

We delivered a WordPress and WooCommerce experience aligned with the brand — structured product catalogues, category-led navigation, and a content-forward About story that matches how they sell in the real world. The stack keeps merchandising in the team’s hands while the storefront presents Beard and Butter as the premium African grooming brand it is — the same brand GQ South Africa profiled alongside their US and pan-African distribution ambitions.

HOW WE BUILT IT

Product thinking, design, and engineering working together.

A brand story that sells before the cart

The Okpaleke brothers built Beard and Butter around locally sourced carrier and essential oils, black soap infusions, and shea-butter-forward formulas — born from frustration with importing beard products from abroad. The About narrative on the site mirrors that origin: family-owned, lab-tested, and aimed at the “new African groomed man.” We made sure the storefront leads with that credibility, not just product grids.

Category-led WooCommerce merchandising

Grooming brands grow by expanding SKUs, not by rebuilding the site each time. We structured WooCommerce around how customers actually shop — beard oils, balms, shampoo, body wash, clay masks, candles, and accessories — so merchandising stays manageable as the catalog grows. Hero products like Man of Ages sit alongside full category pages without cluttering the experience.

Built for reach beyond Lagos

By the time GQ sat down with co-founder and CEO Jeffery Okpaleke, Beard and Butter was already distributing in the US (Texas, New York, Virginia) and shipping across Africa, including South Africa. The site had to support that positioning: a professional DTC presence that reads “premium African brand made in Africa by Africans” — not a side project shop.

PROJECT STEPS

A clear path from scope to launch.

01

Brand & catalog discovery

Mapped product families, category hierarchy, and the core purchase paths from discovery (press, social, search) to checkout.

02

WordPress theme & storefront UX

Implemented a premium, grooming-appropriate layout with clear shop navigation, hero product placement, and trust-building About content.

03

WooCommerce setup & product structure

Configured categories, product pages, and cart flows so the team can add SKUs and seasonal lines without developer dependency.

04

Launch & iteration

Shipped the live storefront at beardxbutter.com and iterated on merchandising, content, and category expansion as the brand scaled distribution.

WHY WE BUILT IT

Beard and Butter is the kind of client story we like — a real product with real formulation work behind it, and a brand that earned press on its own merits. Our job was to give that story a storefront worthy of GQ-level ambition: WordPress and WooCommerce done cleanly, so the brothers can focus on product while the site carries premium African grooming to customers worldwide.
